A Day in the Life: Carpeting, Cabling, and Unexpected DIY Challenges

By | November 30, 2025

My mornings start with the familiar aroma of fresh coffee brewing—a simple pleasure that fuels the day ahead. Right after, I turn my attention to an important routine: caring for our diabetic dog. Twice a day, I give her insulin, a ritual that’s turned me into something of an amateur vet over the years.

Once she’s settled, I turn to the day’s projects, which recently included removing the carpeting from our office. It seemed simple enough on the surface. A few hours, some elbow grease, and I’d have a fresh start in the space. But, as these things go, my day took an unexpected turn.

In the process of cutting and hauling out the carpet, I also accidentally cut through something a bit more delicate: our internet wiring. It’s amazing how one small misstep can lead to a cascade of extra work. Instead of wrapping up the day with a freshly cleared room, I found myself rewiring sections of our home network and learning more than I ever planned to about ethernet cables.

Next up, my wife and I will be painting the office and putting in new flooring, but for now, we’re taking it one step at a time. There’s something satisfying, though, about handling these unexpected challenges. Carpeting removal and network repairs aren’t exactly my usual to-do list, but they gave me a break from my desk, a chance to troubleshoot, and a reason to appreciate the simple luxury of a working internet connection. And, who knows? Maybe this experience will spark ideas for a future project—one with fewer cables, ideally!
